Homemade White Sauce Mix

Make your own homemade mix for white sauce and use it as a blank for quick sauces. This recipe is a great replacement for Alfredo’s purchased sauce for a pasta that will save you money. The mixture itself is plain skimmed milk powder, flour and salt, with minced butter.

To prepare the sauce from the mixture, you add cool water and heat it until thickened. To replace 450 gr. can of purchased Alfredo sauce, you must mix 3/4 tbsp. mixtures with 1-3 / 4 tbsp. water. Season the sauce to your liking; add dried thyme, basil, tarragon or marjoram. You can make this sauce cheese, just adding any fresh grated cheese: cheddar, gouda, hawarti, parmesan, pecorino romano or swiss. This sauce is excellent in casseroles and can be used for quick cooking pasta with cheese or gratins. White sauce is a basic recipe and everyone should know how to make it. You can double this recipe if you often cook. Store the mixture in a tightly closed container in the refrigerator. up to 2 months.

Ingredients for the recipe:

  • 2 tbsp. skimmed milk powder
  • 1 tbsp. wheat flour
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp. (230 gr.) Butter (margarine or vegetable butter)
  • 1/8 tsp ground white pepper

Recipe preparation:

  1. In a medium bowl, mix the powdered milk, flour and salt with whisk thoroughly.
  2. Use a dough knife or two knives to chop the butter with flour until the mixture looks like cornmeal.
  3. Place in an airtight container and store the mixture in the fridge. Use a mixture of white sauce for 2 months.
  4. To prepare a white sauce, mix the mixture 1/2 tbsp. a mixture of white sauce and 1 tbsp. cold water in a little stew-pan.
  5. Boil the sauce over low heat until smooth, stirring constantly with a whisk. Season to taste. You’ll get about 1 tbsp. classic white sauce.
